AUSTIN, TX – Today, Time To Care: Save Texas Caregivers Now announced that the Down Syndrome Association of Central Texas (DSACT) has joined the coalition, further strengthening the statewide movement to address the urgent issue of underfunding faced by direct support professionals (DSPs) who tirelessly care for individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities (IDD).
The chronic underfunding of DSPs has not only compromised the quality of care provided to individuals with IDD but has also led to the regrettable closure of essential group homes, leaving many vulnerable Texans without vital support.
“We are eager to stand alongside Time To Care in their mission to address the critical need for fair compensation for DSPs,” said Julia Forslund, DSACT Executive Director. “We are committed to ensuring that our members and other Texans with IDD receive the high-quality care they deserve. Together, we can make a meaningful difference in the lives of DSPs and the Texans they support.”
The coalition is urging state leaders to authorize an emergency appropriations request through the Legislative Budget Board (LBB) to raise the salary for community-based DSPs from $10.60 to $15 an hour. This will help address the immediate workforce crisis facing DSPs, ensuring that Texans with IDD can receive the support they need.
Carole Smith, Executive Director of the Private Providers Association of Texas (PPAT) and a spokesperson for the coalition, expressed profound gratitude for DSACT’s partnership stating: “We will never stop being a voice for the voiceless. Securing competitive wages for those supporting our state’s most vulnerable is imperative, and we are proud to welcome DSACT to help strengthen our voice urging state leaders to address the ongoing workforce crisis facing those who serve Texans with IDD.”
The Down Syndrome Association of Central Texas (DSACT) is dedicated to enriching the lives of individuals with Down syndrome at every stage of life through a wide range of programs and services. DSACT offers specific programs tailored for individuals with Down syndrome and their families, such as social activities, recreational opportunities, speech therapy, educational resources, and support for new parents. DSACT also extends services to the broader Central Texas community, including educators and healthcare providers, to create a more inclusive and compassionate world that benefits everyone.
