AUSTIN, TX – Today, the Time To Care TX coalition issued the following statement on the Texas Legislature advancing budget proposals that recognize the urgent need to enhance funding to support community-based services for Texans with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD):
“Thanks to the powerful advocacy work of our coalition members, alongside family members, community leaders, providers, and those who serve Texans with IDD, the 89th Texas Legislature has rightfully recognized the urgent need to devote new funds to ensure quality, continuous care for Texans with IDD in community-based settings.
“The ongoing workforce crisis has caused direct support professionals (DSPs) serving Texans with IDD to seek employment elsewhere due to persistently low wages, leading to the continued closure of group homes across the state. It is now more critical than ever for legislators to approve an appropriation of at least $317 million in General Revenue funds to stabilize Texas’ community IDD service system, including by increasing wages for community-based DSPs to $17.50 per hour.
“As the Texas House and Senate prepare to move to the next phase in budget negotiations, we will continue to work closely with members and leadership in the Texas Legislature to ensure the 89th Legislature makes the investments necessary to stabilize the community-based IDD care system in Texas. Our most vulnerable and those who serve them deserve no less.”
Time To Care: Save Texas Caregivers Now is a coalition dedicated to securing competitive wages for Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) who provide essential care to Texans with intellectual or developmental disabilities (IDD). Through collaboration and grassroots efforts, the coalition strives to enact meaningful change at both the legislative and community levels. Learn more at www.timetocaretx.org
